ā The Sunday Brew: 10-Minute FoodāRevolution or Recipe for Disaster?
š Zepto CafĆ© just crossed 100,000 orders per day, closing in on a $100M annual GMV with juicy 50% gross margins. CEO Aadit Palicha calls this the "beginning of a revolution" in India's quick-service restaurant (QSR) industry.
š Whatās cooking (literally)?
Food in 10 minutes flat. Zepto CafƩ, Blinkit Bistro, and Swiggy Bolt are all racing to get hot meals to your door faster than your chai cools down.
Cloud kitchens to the rescue. These aren't your regular restaurantsātheyāre optimized for speed, not dine-in experiences.
Less thinking, more eating. The easier it is to get food, the less time we spend deciding if we even need it in the first place.
ā ļø But letās be realāhow fresh is this food?
Look, weāre all for convenience, but can a meal thatās cooked, packed, and delivered in 10 minutes really be fresh? Weāre not saying itās definitely frozen, but letās be honestāthereās no way theyāre making a fresh dough, rolling it out, and baking a puff in that time. Some level of pre-prepping, pre-cooking, and shortcuts are a given.
And whatās actually selling? When we opened the app today, the bestsellers were:
š„ Puff
š« Chocolate mousse
š§ Chili cheese toast
If this is the future of food, we might be headed for a very carb-heavy one.
š“ And hereās the bigger picture: A Lancet study recently dropped a shocking statā70% of Indiaās urban population is overweight or obese. š¤Æ
Now, weāre not here to rain on anyoneās 10-minute food parade, but maybe we need to rethink the way we eat. Instead of making food faster, should we be making food better? Maybe itās time to promote healthier grab-and-go optionsābecause letās be real, we canāt build a fast-food future on chocolate mousse and chili cheese toast.
